The Default Is a Subscription. We Chose Otherwise.
Almost every AI coding tool on the market in 2026 is a subscription. You pay every month, you keep paying every month, and the moment you stop paying, the software stops working. That is a perfectly reasonable business model — for the vendor.
We sell a perpetual license instead. Doforu Pro costs $49 once. You own the software. There is no subscription to cancel, no seat to renew, no billing event waiting to surprise you at the end of a busy month. It is a deliberate, structural choice, and this article explains both the logic and the honest boundaries of it.
What "Perpetual License" Actually Means Here
We want to be precise, because "buy once, use forever" is a phrase that gets stretched in this industry.
Here is exactly what you get for $49:
- A permanent right to use the software. The version you buy keeps working forever, on macOS, Windows, and Linux. This does not expire and is not tied to a billing cycle.
- 1 year of updates included. For 12 months from purchase, you receive every new release — feature updates, new provider integrations, bug fixes.
- $49/year to renew updates after that. Renewal is optional. If you let it lapse, your software keeps running exactly as it is; you simply stop receiving new versions until you renew.
What we are not claiming: this is not "free updates forever." It is a buy-once model with an optional, cheap update path. If you never want another update, you pay $49 and nothing more, full stop. We would rather state that plainly than write marketing copy you can catch us on.
Subscriptions vs. a One-Time License: 1 Year, 2 Years, 3 Years
All competitor prices below are their published list prices as of October 2026. Monthly plan prices are annualized at 12 months per year. Every number is reproducible with a calculator.
Headline comparison (entry paid tier of each tool)
| Tool | Price | 1 Year | 2 Years | 3 Years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Doforu Pro (perpetual license) | $49 once + optional $49/yr updates | $49 | $49 | $49 |
| Cursor Pro | $20/mo | $240 | $480 | $720 |
| GitHub Copilot Pro | $10/mo | $120 | $240 | $360 |
| Claude Pro (includes Claude Code) | $20/mo | $240 | $480 | $720 |
| Devin Desktop Pro | $20/mo | $240 | $480 | $720 |
Doforu's column shows the mandatory cost rather than an accumulated total: $49, paid once. Update renewals are optional at $49/yr and are never required to keep using the software you bought.
Full tier comparison
Because vendors tier their subscriptions, here is the same table across every advertised individual tier.

| Cursor Ultra | $200 | $2,400 | $4,800 | $7,200 |
| GitHub Copilot Pro | $10 | $120 | $240 | $360 |
| GitHub Copilot Pro+ | $39 | $468 | $936 | $1,404 |
| GitHub Copilot Max | $100 | $1,200 | $2,400 | $3,600 |
| Claude Pro (incl. Claude Code) | $20 | $240 | $480 | $720 |
| Claude Max (entry tier) | $100 | $1,200 | $2,400 | $3,600 |

| Devin Desktop Max | $200 | $2,400 | $4,800 | $7,200 |
Note that none of these figures include the model usage you actually consume. On subscription tools, plan tiers gate how much premium usage you get and then bill overages on top. On Doforu, you bring your own API key (BYOK) and pay model providers directly at their list rate, with no markup layered on by us. Your Doforu license cost is a fixed, knowable $49; the only variable cost is the inference you personally choose to consume.
No Usage Tiers, No Token Meters, No Surprise Bills
This is the part of the subscription model that generates the most frustration, so it deserves its own section.
On a metered subscription, your cost is a function of your behavior, and your behavior is hard to predict. A heavy refactoring week, a long-running agent session, a model that retries more than expected — all of it lands on a bill that arrives after the fact. That uncertainty is a real cost, even when the headline number looks small.
Doforu's structure removes that category of risk:
- No usage tiers. There is not a Pro plan and a Pro+ plan and an Ultra plan. There is one license.
- No token metering by us. We do not sit between you and the model provider and take a cut per token.
- No per-seat multiplication for teams. Listing price is $49 per user, once.
- No unexpected overage events. The bill you agree to is the bill you pay.
The tradeoff is honest and worth stating: BYOK means your inference spend is genuinely yours and genuinely variable. But it is visible. You see the provider's meter directly, at cost, instead of a bundled quota that may or may not reflect what you actually used.
Why a Perpetual License Is Possible for Us at All
We can sell this way because of an architectural decision we made early: Doforu is a native desktop application that runs 100% locally.
All computation — task decomposition, orchestration, context handling, agent dispatch — happens on your machine. Doforu does not operate a fleet of inference servers that every user's usage has to pay for, indefinitely. Our marginal cost of you using the software for year four is close to zero, which is precisely why we can sell you year four for close to zero.
A cloud-hosted IDE cannot do this. Its pricing model is structurally tied to the compute and inference it must run on your behalf, forever. That is not a moral failing; it is a cost structure. But it is why "just sell a lifetime license" is not an option those vendors realistically have.
The Structural Advantages a Subscription Cannot Copy
Your data stays on your machine. With Doforu, your code, your files, and your project context stay on your desktop. There is no indexing step that uploads your repository to a vendor's servers, and no agent backend that receives your code to act on it. One honest caveat applies to every local-first tool, ours included: if you pick a cloud model, the prompts and context you send for that model do go to that provider — that is inherent to using their API. With Ollama or vLLM, nothing leaves your machine at all. For anyone working under an NDA, in a regulated industry, or on client code they are not permitted to ship to third parties, this is the difference between "allowed to use AI tooling" and "not allowed."
It works offline. Point Doforu at local models via Ollama or vLLM and the entire workflow runs with no network connection at all. If you are on a plane, behind an air-gapped network, or in a region where connectivity is unreliable or restricted, the tool keeps working. No subscription-based cloud tool can offer this, because the subscription is the cloud connection.
It keeps working if we disappear. A perpetual license has a property that subscriptions fundamentally lack: the software does not stop on a date. If you stop renewing updates, your existing version runs. A cloud-dependent subscription has the opposite property by design.
Your vendor risk is bounded. Subscriptions mean every price change, every plan restructuring, every quiet redefinition of "premium requests" is a decision made about you, without you. A perpetual license caps that exposure: your cost of continuing to use what you already bought is zero.
Where a Subscription Genuinely Wins (Honest Section)
We are not going to pretend subscriptions have no advantages. They do:
- Zero upfront planning. $10–$20/month is a rounding error on a team's budget; $49 is still a purchase decision.
- Always current. A subscription keeps you on the latest version automatically, with no renewal step to remember.
- Bundled inference. If you would rather not manage API keys or reason about token costs, a bundled quota is genuinely simpler.
- Frictionless onboarding. No setup, no key management, no model selection decisions.
If what you want is the lowest-friction path to AI-assisted editing inside an IDE, and you would rather not think about cost at all, a subscription is a fine answer. Our argument is about structure, not about claiming subscriptions are a scam.
Who the Perpetual License Actually Suits
The buy-once model is the right shape for:
- Individual developers and small teams who run the same tool for years and do not want a permanent line item.
- Privacy-constrained work — regulated industries, client code, NDA-bound projects — where sending code to a vendor's cloud is not an option.
- Intermittent or offline environments where a cloud dependency is a liability rather than an asset.
- People who already pay for models directly and see no reason to also pay a platform for the privilege of a quota.
- Long-horizon planners who would rather own a tool than rent one.
If you replace your editor every six months and want the newest bundled model on day one, a subscription will serve you better. We would rather you pick correctly than pick us.
FAQ
Bottom Line
A subscription is rent. A perpetual license is ownership, with an optional maintenance fee. Which one is "better" depends entirely on how long you plan to use the tool and how much control you want over your cost and your data.
Doforu is $49 once. Updates are included for a year, renewal is $49/year if you want to keep receiving them, and the software you bought keeps working either way. No tiers, no meters, no surprise bills — and because it runs entirely on your machine, none of your code ever leaves your desktop.
